'Starman', taken from 1972's 'Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars' was the song that launched Bowie's career into stratospheric stardom, where he remained for the next ten years.
Although the preceding album, 'Hunky Dory' had been well received by critics it failed to provide a hit single.
When the recording sessions for 'Ziggy' were finished, 'Starman' wasn't even included on the album, it was added at the last minute at the request of RCA head honcho Dennis Katz who complained that the album didn't have anything worthy of release as a single(?!)
