'For Emma Forever Ago' was recorded at Justin Vernon's father's remote hunting cabin just over ten years ago. He had previously been a member of the group DeYarmond Edison. The band broke up in 2006 and after an illness Vernon, tired of both his songwriting and life in general, moved to the cabin hoping to spend some time alone.
In the end Vernon spent nearly three months isolated in the wilderness, hunting his own food and spending his days drinking beer and watching tv, struggling to get over the break up of his band.
Though he didn't set out with the intention of making an album, friends loved the songs he'd written so he decided to self-release For Emma, Forever Ago in July 2007.
