By the time the band were ready to record their debut album they were already receiving overtures from major labels. However, they chose to self fund the record and record in a low budget Brooklyn studio.
It was produced by Tv On The Radio's Dave Sitek who'd they'd met whilst working together in a clothes shop and then mixed by guitarist Nick with Alan Moulder in London who had previously produced Nine Inch Nails and My Bloody Valentine.
Interscope wanted to release Maps as the first single but the band resisted, when the label got them to agree the song was an immediate hit on MTV and sales of the album tripled.
